The GWC and RockVentures Climbing Center are collaborating to offer a full day of indoor rock climbing and whitewater kayaking camp.
Participants will enjoy the action at the Lock 32 Whitewater Park and RockVentures state of the art climbing and high ropes course facility, while benefiting from the educated and highly talented staff of each organization.
The camp is focused on providing a fun and energetic environment in which each student has the opportunity to focuses on safety, skills, team building and self-confidence.
Each day, for a week participants experience a half-day of whitewater kayak action at Lock 32 Whitewater Park and a half-day at RockVentures improving climbing skills.
This program is for girls and boys ages 10-17. All participants must be able to swim 25 yards.
Program FormatThe program is offered Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm. The student will spend a half-day at Rock Ventures and a half-day learning to kayak at Lock 32 Whitewater Park. The program staff will supervise the students at all times with a staff to student ration of 1:5
At the RockVentures: Stretching, climbing skills and drills, traversing, bouldering, climbing up and down routes, ClimbFit exercises and balance skills with indoor ropes course.
Monday – Stretching, warm up drills (done daily), learn basic climbing equipment and uses, knot tying, basic climbing fundamentals
Tuesday – Intro to top-rope climbing, belay training, body positioning, find your climbing level
Wednesday – Training drills, rappelling, intro to bouldering
Thursday – Route setting, high ropes course and additional climbing elements
Friday – Awarded Rock Climbing Certificate, training drills, practice learned skills
At Lock 32 Whitewater Park: This class is all about the basics of being a paddler. The program involves many fun activities, including games and swimming to build a strong kayaking and safety skill set. Kayaks, helmets, paddles and life jackets are provided
Monday - Will be on the flat calm water. We will start out with wet exits (getting out after you flip over). Then we will move onto basic strokes like the forward and reverse stroke, as well as the rudder stroke. This will build the foundation on how to control and move the boat or actually go somewhere.
Tuesday - We will learn how to spin the boat (sweep strokes) while working on balance. Near the end of day two we will have a chance to run a section or two of the course.
Wednesday - “GAME DAY.”
Thursday - Will include a river talk *hazards and features) as well as how to enter and exit eddys.
Friday - Will be dedicated to running the runner while putting everything we’ve learned together
